3 Verses to Read Before You Talk Yourself Out of Exercising

Three powerful Bible verses to pray before your next workout β€” so God's Word, not your excuses, gets the final say.

Do you ever struggle to find the motivation to exercise? If you've ever talked yourself out of a workout, you're not alone. The good news is that God has already given us the encouragement we need through His Word. These three powerful Bible verses for exercise have become my go-to Scriptures whenever I need strength, motivation, and a reminder that taking care of my health is one way I can honor God.

Reading and meditating on Bible Scriptures is one of the most powerful ways to keep moving. It is God's power renewing you as you read and meditate on it.

You don't have to let negative thoughts make your decisions. As believers, we have something more powerful than our feelings β€” we have God's Word.

Before you let excuses win today, take a minute to encourage yourself with these powerful Bible Scriptures.

Encourage Yourself Like David Did

One of my favorite examples in the Bible is David.

In 1 Samuel 30:6, David was overwhelmed. Everything around him looked hopeless, yet instead of staying discouraged, David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.

That simple phrase is so powerful.

Sometimes no one else is around to motivate us. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves of what God has already said.

Because God and His Word are One (John 1:1), when we speak His Word over our lives, we're filling our hearts and minds with His truth instead of our excuses.

That's exactly what I do before a workout when I don't feel like moving.

Here Are the 3 Verses I Read

I don't just read these verses β€” I personalize them. I make them my own prayer and declaration. And you can too!

1. Philippians 4:13

*"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."*

When I personalize it, I pray:

"I will do all things through Christ who strengthens me β€” including exercising today."

That reminds me that I'm not relying on my own motivation. Christ is my strength.

2. Isaiah 40:31

*"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength..."*

Here's how I pray it:

"I trust in the Lord, and He gives me new strength. I will exercise and not grow weary. I will walk and not faint."

God doesn't just renew our spiritual strength. He also gives us what we need to keep going one step at a time.

3. 3 John 1:2

*"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers."*

I make it personal by saying:

"I am prosperous, and I am in divine health, even as my soul prospers."

What a beautiful reminder that God cares about the whole person β€” body, soul, and spirit.

Why Speaking Scripture Matters

Our minds are constantly listening to something.

If we aren't intentional, we'll listen to:

  • Fear
  • Discouragement
  • Comparison
  • Excuses

But when we speak God's Word, we replace those lies with truth.

Instead of saying:

  • "I can't."
  • "I'm too far behind."
  • "I'll never stay consistent."

We begin saying:

  • Christ strengthens me.
  • God renews my strength.
  • I receive God's promises, and I am healthy and thriving.
  • I will honor God with the body He's given me.

Little by little, our thinking begins to change. And changed thinking leads to changed habits.

Before Your Next Workout

The next time you catch yourself talking yourself out of exercising, pause for just one minute.

  • Open your Bible β€” or pull up these verses on your phone.
  • Read them slowly.
  • Pray them personally.
  • Then take the first step.

Because God's truth is greater than your feelings.

Move your body with gratitude, knowing that every small step is an opportunity to glorify God.

Today doesn't require perfection β€” it simply requires obedience.

Keep moving, keep trusting, and remember β€” God's Word is your greatest source of strength. One verse, one prayer, and one step at a time, He is faithful to lead you toward greater health for His glory.
